Mt. Moiwa, overlooking Hokkaido’s largest city of two million people,is located at an altitude of 531m,making it approximately 200m higher than Mt. Hakodate. Visitors can take a ropeway from the foot of the mountain to the mountainside, and then take the “Morris Car” (cable car) from the mountainside to the summit or climb up on foot (the summit is only accessible by Morris Car during the winter season). The view showcases the glittering Ishikari Plain with the sparkling city lights spread out as far as the eye can see,for a view fully justifying popular expressions for it such as “a carpet of light” and “a sparkling jewelry box.” This is the most famous night-viewing spot in Sapporo, and on clear nights the moonlight joins in to let viewers enjoy an even more impressive scene. This area is even registered as one of “Japan’s 100 Best Full Moons” and is one of the best places to see the full moon. The breathtaking combination of the city lights and the full moon lighting the sky never fail to impress night view fans from all across Japan.
