The stone bridges across the Nakajima River have a significant presence in the daily lives of Nagasaki residents, and this series of 18 bridges running from upstream to downstream are a rarity even in the whole of Japan. During the summer “obon” season in early August as well as in late August, over 200 lanterns are lit along this river, with this area hosting the “Nakajima River Summer Tradition – Nagasaki Night City.” One place particularly popular with visitors is the illuminated Megane Bridge. When night falls, people say it’s so bright that you’ll want to pull out your sunglasses. On the upstream side at the “Ichiran Bridge,” incredibly creative light patterns are produced using unique LED light equipment. The lights and colors change during the Nagasaki Lantern Festival and the river bridges resemble dragon scales which are deeply connected to Nagasaki City.
