This designated national treasure built in 1865 is the oldest gothic-style church in Japan. Created in memorial of Japan’s 26 martyrs (26 people executed for their Catholic beliefs at the command of Toyotomi Hideyoshi),it was built facing Nagasaki City’s Nishizaka Hill, the site of the martyrdom of those 26 Christians. One of the cathedral’s charms is the sparkling stained glass in the afternoon,as well as an otherworldly appearance in the evening. New lighting has been used to illuminate Oura Cathedral in recent years, and its solemn form emerging out of the darkness heavily pierces the heart. There is even a saying that “coming to Nagasaki and returning home without seeing this cathedral at night is a waste” for travelers visiting the city. Even among the various charming church illuminations of Nagasaki, this exotic cathedral has a particularly strong presence.
